Puerto Plata Vacations

Set on the Dominican Republic’s north Atlantic coast, against a backdrop of rugged mountains, Puerto Plata captivates with its many wonders. Considered the birthplace of tourism in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is the country’s third-largest city and was named Silver Port by Christopher Columbus, due to the lustrous silver color of the coast at sunset.

Overview

Puerto Plata is home to spectacular beaches, archaeological ruins, and lush forests awaiting exploration. Highlights of a visit to Puerto Plata include hiking along the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua; diving the Airport Wall, a site teeming with marine life and coral; and attending an event at the Greek Amphitheatre, which boasts breathtaking views of the ocean.

What to see

Playa Dorada – Puerto Plata’s most beautiful beach is a stretch of golden sand where a lot of the area’s all-inclusive resorts are located. This Blue Flag beach is considered one of the best in the country. Paseo de Doña Blanca – Otherwise known as Pink Street, Paseo de Doña Blanca is literally a pink street, including the buildings, walkway, window frames, etc. Umbrella Street – After perusing Pink Street, take cover at pedestrian-only Umbrella Street, which is covered with colorful umbrellas. Here you will also find shops, bars, restaurants and cafés. Fortaleza San Felipe – This historic Spanish fortress was built in the 16th century and is one of the most venerated colonial military buildings in the Caribbean. Today, it is a museum showcasing the original canons, weapons and more. Malecón de Puerto Plata – This paved pathway runs along the coast and offers awe-inspiring ocean views. Starting at Fortaleza San Felipe, the Malecón passes a plethora of white-sand beaches, bars and restaurants.
