Overview
Inverness has been described as “the happiest place in Scotland.” Highland history and tradition come alive at Inverness Castle, perched on a cliff overlooking the River Ness and a setting in Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”; Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, where visitors can learn about the people and traditions of the Highlands via a plethora of artifacts and exhibits; and nearby Culloden, the site of one of Scotland’s most important battles. Inverness is also the gateway to world-renowned Loch Ness, home of the purported Loch Ness Monster and the ruins of iconic Urquhart Castle.
What to see
The Highlanders’ Museum – Follow in the footsteps of the Highland soldier from just after the Battle of Culloden to the present day and view the largest collection of military artifacts outside of Edinburgh. The Highlanders’ Museum, located in Fort George, showcases the history of the Highland Regiments. Clava Cairns – This Bronze Age burial site, believed to be the inspiration for Craigh na Dun in the beloved “Outlander” series, dates back almost 4,000 years. It consists of passage graves, ring cairns, standing stones and burial monuments. Loch Ness – No visit to Inverness is complete without taking a daytrip to mysterious Loch Ness, Scotland’s most famous lake. Explore the ruins of historic Urquhart Castle, search for the legendary Loch Ness Monster, and learn about “Nessie” and the lake at the Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition, located next to Nessieland.
