Overview
This idyllic town is referenced in such films as The Shawshank Redemption as the ultimate paradise. Once a sleepy fishing village, Zihuatanejo (known simply as Zihua to the locals) has expanded into a thriving town while still managing to maintain its quaint vibe.
Walk down the cobblestoned streets lined with seafood restaurants and art galleries. Browse the lively markets where fishermen display their fresh catch in a tip of the hat to the town’s main source of livelihood.
The ocean offers divers and snorkelers an abundant array of marine fauna. Between October and March, local beaches are transformed as sea turtles lay their eggs on the shore.
Colorful homes dot lush hills overlooking the sea. In town, visit the Mercado Municipal (public market), where you’ll find fresh produce, local handicrafts and more. In Zihuatanejo, the spirit of traditional Mexico thrives at every turn.
What To Do
Take a stroll through the town’s quaint center and dine on fresh seafood, local cuisine and explore the colorful destination’s many gift shops and small boutiques.
Visit the wildlife preserve at nearby Barra de Potosi lagoons. Swim and kayak along the sparkling crescent-shaped bay or snorkel at Las Gatas Island, marveling at the abundant sea life.
Feast on fresh dorado and grilled red snapper at lovely Playa Larga beach. Bicycle through an eco-reserve in the nearby Ciclopista Ixtapa (bike path) and take in all the sights and sounds of nature.
