Overview
La Romana is located near cave-riddled Cotubanamá National Park, which includes Saona and Catalina islands and boasts white-sand beaches, subtropical forests, Taino rock art, the shipwreck of notorious pirate Captain Kidd’s Quedagh Merchant, and more than 500 flora species and 300 types of birds. La Romana, situated on the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic, is also home to Altos de Chavón, a replica of a 16th-century Mediterranean village where you will find the Regional Museum of Archaeology, which boasts thousands of pre-Columbian artifacts.
What to do
Explore Altos de Chavón – This re-creation of a 16th-century Mediterranean village is perched on a cliff overlooking the Chavón River and is one of the most popular attractions in La Romana. Carved entirely of stone, Altos de Chavón features cobblestone streets, an outdoor Greek-style amphitheater where international artists perform, restaurants, bars, shops, art galleries, artist studios, craft workshops, and the Regional Museum of Archaeology. Hit the Beach – La Romana is blessed with breathtaking Caribbean beaches, including Cabo Rojo Beach, regarded as one of the most romantic beaches in the Dominican Republic; Bayahibe Beach, an awe-inspiring Blue Flag beach; and the legendary Minitas Beach, located in the heart of Casa de Campo. Take a Day Trip to Catalina Island – This uninhabited paradisiacal island lies off the coast of La Romana and is renowned for its turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, and coral reefs. Divers and snorkelers will want to explore the Quedagh Merchant shipwreck, a vessel that belonged to the infamous pirate Captain Kidd.
