Overview
Scenic Lake Atitlán is ringed by a trio of dramatic volcanoes, aka “The Three Giants” (Atitlán, Tolimán, and San Pedro), forested hills, and Mayan villages. All of this and the lake’s mesmerizing turquoise-blue water make it one of Guatemala’s most-visited destinations. Some of Lake Atitlán’s must-see sights include the Atitlán Nature Reserve and its numerous culturally rich towns, including Panajachel, San Marcos, San Antonio Palopó, and San Juan, which is the starting point for the revered Indian Nose hike.
What to See
Panajachel - Lake Atitlán's hub and top town is a treasure trove of traditional Mayan markets, restaurants, bars, and cafes. This gateway to the lake and its smaller towns is the perfect home base from which to explore the area.
Atitlán Nature Reserve - More than just a nature reserve, here you will find ziplining, hanging bridges, waterfalls, and some of the best hiking in the country. It is also a haven for butterflies.
San Juan La Laguna - Visit local Mayan artists and witness traditional art techniques that date back centuries, particularly weaving.
