Overview

Norway’s second-largest city, which retains a small-town vibe, is known for its narrow cobblestone alleys and historic structures that cling to its verdant hills. Once the center of trade between Norway and the rest of Europe, Bergen is still home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bryggen, a historic Hanseatic League wharf which today houses a plethora of pubs, restaurants, cafés, shops and museums. Bewitching Bryggen, one of Norway’s most visited and venerated attractions, consists of 62 wooden buildings with gabled facades sewn together with threadlike alleyways.

What To Do

Some of Bergen’s must-see sights include KODE Art Museums and Composer Homes, where you will find art from the Renaissance to the contemporary era in four distinct buildings and Troldhaugen, the former home of renowned Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg which today features a museum, concert hall, composer’s hut and Grieg’s grave. And no visit to Bergen is complete without visiting the Bergenhus Fortress, one of Norway’s oldest and best-preserved fortifications; Fantoft Stave Church, a remarkable reconstructed stave church; and Mount Fløyen, which is reached by funicular and offers commanding views of Bergen and the nearby fjords.
