Flagstaff & Sedona Vacations & Travel Tips

When to Go

Two types of people generally visit the American Southwest, those who love the heat and those who prefer milder temperatures. For the latter, the best time to visit Flagstaff and Sedona would be between March and May, when desert flowers are in full bloom; or fall, around mid-September to November, when temperatures range from the mid-60s F to the mid-80s F. Even during the winter, the weather is never too disagreeable; and snow sprinkled on red rocks and tall pines is an unforgettable sight.

Fast Facts

Vortices are believed to be energetic regions on earth where energy is either entering or projecting out of the ground. Otherworldly vortex sites, such as Bell Rock or Boynton Canyon, abound in Sedona. The town was named after 19th century settler, Sedona Schnebly. Arizona’s tallest peak, Mount Humphreys, towers above Flagstaff at 12,633 feet. The designer of Flagstaff’s elegant Riordan Mansion also created the Grand Canyon’s El Tovar Hotel. The Grand Canyon lies about 75 miles northwest of Flagstaff, and Sedona is only 30 miles south. Phoenix is about a two-hour drive from Sedona. Sedona’s highest point is Coffee Pot Rock at 5,600 feet above sea level. The canyon walls of Sedona’s surrounding landscape display nine layers of stone from various geological periods spanning hundreds of millions of years. Over 90 feature films have been shot in the Sedona area, starring such renowned actors as John Wayne, Elvis Presley, Robert Deniro and Johnny Depp.
