Overview
This coastal city southeast of Seoul was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Silla. Gyeongju, aka the Golden City, is renowned for its historical attractions, including temples, tombs, Buddhist statuary, palace ruins and pagodas, and boasts three UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
What to See
Tumuli Gongwon – See the tombs of the royals of the Silla Dynasty at the site of these 23 burial mounds, also known as Daereungwon Tomb Park.
Bulguksa – This historic Buddhist complex and UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to seven national treasures, including the Seokgatap and Dabotap pagodas and Seokguram Grotto, a Buddhist cave temple containing a large statue of Buddha.
Gyeongju National Park – Korea’s only historical national park is home to a plethora of cultural attractions, including Bulguksa, and scenic hiking trails.
